COLLOQUIUM PROGRAM

The International Colloquium on Law and Religion will take place during the 7th Law and Religion Research Meeting (May 4-6, 2021), organized by the Brazilian Center of Studies in Law and Religion. The Colloquium will be held virtually through Zoom, on May 6, 2021, 2pm - 6pm (BRT / UTC-3).

GUEST SPEAKERS PROFILE

Thiago Alves Pinto

Thiago Alves Pinto is a Departmental Lecturer in Legal Studies and International Human Rights Law at the Oxford University Department for Continuing Education. Thiago holds an LLB (Hons.) from Centro Universitário Curitiba (Brazil) and a Master's Degree in International Human Rights Law from Åbo Akademi University (Finland), where he graduated with honours eximia cum laude approbatur. He also holds a DPhil in Law from Oxford University, on the topic of offence to religious belief in international human rights law. Thiago has been actively involved with NGOs, Think Tanks, as well as national and international organisations, having worked with the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, UNESCO, the International Organization for Migration, the International Panel of Parliamentarians for Freedom of Religion or Belief, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, and Chatham House. He has also participated in research activities at the Bonavero Institute of Human Rights (University of Oxford) and the Oslo Coalition on Freedom of Religion or Belief (University of Oslo); as well as taught in both universities. At Oxford, Thiago was the Graduate Teaching Assistant in Human Rights Law (2015-2017) and a Tutor in Human Rights Law (2016-2018 and 2019-2020).

Ibrahim Salama

Ibrahim Salama is the Chief of the Human Rights Treaties Branch of the Office of the United Nations (UN) High Commissioner for Human Rights. As such he manages the functioning of the UN treaty body system which monitors states’ compliance with their human rights obligations through periodical reporting, visits, inquiries and individual petitions. He is a former Visiting Fellow at the Geneva Academy - Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.

Michael Wiener

Michael Wiener works in the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights. He was also one of the experts who participated in the consultations that drafted the Camden Principles on Freedom of Expression and Equality. His research interests in international human rights law include freedom of religion or belief, freedom of expression, and the prohibition of any advocacy of national, racial or religious hatred that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence. In 2019, he and the co-authors Nazila Ghanea and Heiner Bielefeldt were awarded with the Premio Alberigo Senior Book Award for their international law commentary on “Freedom of Religion or Belief” (Oxford University Press, 2016). He is a Visiting Fellow at the Kellogg College, University of Oxford. LL.M. (London), Ass. iur. (Rheinland-Pfalz), Dr. iur. (Trier).

Mark Hill QC

Mark Hill QC is a barrister specializing in ecclesiastical law and religious liberty. He has represented clients in the UK Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights. He holds judicial appointments in the civil and ecclesiastical courts. He is a lecturer at the Law School of the Open University, and is Visiting Professor at Cardiff University’s Centre for Law and Religion, at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, at Notre Dame University, Sydney and at the Dickson Poon School of Law at King’s College, London. He is a fellow of the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory University. Publications include the Routledge Handbook on Freedom of Religion and Belief; Christianity and Criminal Law; Great Christian Jurists in English History; Magna Carta, Religion and the Rule of Law; Religion and Law in the United Kingdom, Religion and Discrimination Law in the European Union. He is Consultant Editor of the Ecclesiastical Law Journal and a member of the Editorial Boards of the Oxford Journal of Law and Religion and the Revista General de Derecho Canónico y Derecho Ecclesiástico del Estado and is a former President of the European Consortium for Church and State Research. He is the Vice-President of the International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies - ICLARS.

Raoni Macedo Bielschowsky

Raoni Macedo Bielschowsky is a member of the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Uberlândia and received his Ph.D in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He is the leading researcher of the group "Politeia: political culture, constitutional theory and identity", and Tutor of the Program for Tutorial Education in Law at the Federal University of Uberlândia - PET Direito UFU. His research interests include Philosophy and Theory of the Constitution, Constitutional History, Comparative Constitutional Studies and Constitutional Law.

Rodrigo Vitorino Souza Alves

Rodrigo Vitorino Souza Alves is a member of the Faculty of Law of the Federal University of Uberlandia (Brazil). He received his Ph.D in Law (Approved with Distinction by Unanimity) from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (Portugal). Prof. Alves has published academic works and has been invited to speak and present papers at events in Brazil (including the National Congress of Brazil, the Human Rights Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Relations, and several Universities) and international events (including the Universities of Beijing, Oslo, Cardiff, Oxford, Oxford Brookes, Bielefeld, PUC Uruguay e Paraguay, BYU and Virginia; Fundazione Marcianum in Venice; Senate of Uruguay; United Nations - OHCHR; Permanent Council of the Organization of American States). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Series "Law and Religion in a Global Context" published by Springer and the editor of the book "Latin American Perspectives on Law and Religion". He is a member of the International Consortium for Law and Religion Studies (ICLARS) and the Latin American Consortium of Religious Freedom (CLLR). He was an Academic Visitor at the University of Oxford.
