International Law and Religion Moot Court

Brazil 2022

Announcement of the Competition Results and Final Message

The moot court was a competition organized by the Brazilian Center of Studies in Law and Religion - CEDIRE (Centro Brasileiro de Estudos em Direito e Religião) in collaboration with the United Nations Human Rights Treaty Bodies - OHCHR, in Uberlandia, Brazil, on 9 November 2022, during the 8th Law and Religion Research Meeting (7-9 November 2022). The Competition was designed to contribute to the training of law students in subjects related to international human rights law.

The Organizing Committee is truly grateful for all support it had received from numerous people and institutions, including CEDIRE fellow students that worked in the organization of the competition, the universities that supported their teams and made it possible for them to travel and join the oral rounds, as well as coaches who that assisted the teams. A special thanks to the Federal University of Uberlândia, Brigham Young University, and University of Notre Dame for their engagement and support.

We would like to thank Prof. Gary Doxey, Prof. Brett Scharffs, and the International Center for Law and Religion Studies for their valuable partnership and encouragement since the first stages of the organization of the competition. Professor Doxey was supposed to join the competition in person in Brazil, however it was not possible for him to travel.

We are also grateful to Professor Mark Hill KC for his splendid performance as judge of the competition. We thank him very much for carefully reading and evaluating all the briefs, for balancing academic rigour and sensitivity while presiding over the moot court ruling, and for making the competition an engaging educational activity, with considerations and recommendations for each team and each moot court speaker.

Last but not the least, we would like to thank Michael Wiener for drafting the case, as a part of the UN Faith for Rights Framework, and for the collaboration of Andrea Pin, Thiago Alves Pinto, and Rodrigo Vitorino Souza Alves in the reviewing process.
